Does it control portions?

No. A gravity feeder refills the tray whenever it empties, so a pet who eats everything in sight keeps eating. It suits a cat or dog who self-regulates. For a gulper, use the water side only.

Can I leave my cat alone with it for a weekend?

For a healthy adult cat on dry food, a full feeder and water dispenser cover two nights. Beyond that, have someone check in; kibble can bridge, bowls can tip, and a sick cat alone is the risk.

Is it dishwasher safe?

The listing does not say, so we hand wash ours. Warm water and dish soap clean the tray and container in a minute and avoid warping. Dry every part fully; damp kibble clumps and blocks flow.
